Diogenes, anthypatos patrikios and droungarios of the imperial fleet, 10th century. Seal (Lead, 25 mm, 6.94 g, 12 h). MIX-AHΛ Nimbate facing bust of St. Michael, holding scepter in his right hand. Rev. +ΔHOΓЄ/N’ AΘVΠ, ΠA/TPIK S ΔPOΓ, / T,[R, Π]ΛO[H] in four lines, decorations above and below. Unpublished in the standard references. An interesting middle-Byzantine seal bearing a rare naval command. Some striking weakness, otherwise, very fine.

As commander of the imperial fleet (droungarios ton basilikon ploimon), Diogenes was one of highest officials in the Byzantine military.
